The Volvo S90L: Executive Comfort, Coming to the USA

The 2017 Volvo S90 has been a revolution for the automaker. A carmaker that has long been founded in producing some of the safest vehicles on the road, the S90 marks a move forward in the luxury sector. Volvo is not content to stop there though, with new S90 variants like the long-wheelbase S90L close on the horizon.

Setting the S90 Apart

Just as it does with safety, Volvo brings a unique point of view to the realm of full-sized luxury. For one, while many other European automakers lean towards thirsty, rear-wheel drive, overpowered V6 and even V8 engines to power their full-sized flagships, the S90 is more conservative. Base models feature a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an output of 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of speed, while the option of a 316-horsepower turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder produces 295 lb-ft of torque. While these power numbers may not match up on paper with the BMW 5-series that the S90 competes with, there are only so many places you can make use of that much horsepower, and the 5-series has greatly reduced fuel efficiency. Also unlike its European competitors, the S90 is powered by the choice of front- or all-wheel drive, with no rear-wheel drive offered.

It’s not just under the hood where the S90 stands a step above its German and English counterparts. Inside the passenger cabin, the S90 foregoes ostentatious materials and hypermodern design for a clean, sophisticated, yet slightly minimalistic take on luxury. Outside, it’s more of the same, with clean lines, intakes and headlights all working together for a calm, soothing yet classy appearance. A long, coupe-like roofline presents a rakish, dramatic profile that infuses character.

“Composed” is perhaps one of the best ways to describe the S90 – not just in looks, but also in feel. While German counterparts often brag about their ride, Volvo brings the same engineering sense to the suspension that it brings to the industry-leading safety features it is known for. This includes a multilink rear axle with a single transverse composite spring, along with an available air suspension option for the rear axle, particularly useful when the S90 is being used to show around clients and business associates. These features reduce impact harshness without reducing responsiveness and handling.

Extending the Luxury

Currently, Volvo offers an extended model of the flagship S60 sedan, the S60 Inscription trim that adds 3.4 inches more for rear-seat passengers. While the exact dimensions of the S90L haven’t been revealed yet, the upcoming S90L looks to add up to six inches of length, expanding room in both the front and rear seats. Rear doors will be stretched by four to five inches, making it easier to get in and out of the vehicle.

The S90L is aimed at the executive crowd, countering vehicles such as the long-wheelbase variants of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series. Particularly useful for chauffeured services or a business looking to make an impact with a client, the S90L exudes confidence with a sense of responsibility. The availability of fold-out tables, footrests, and a potential multipurpose console as exhibited in their Lounge Console concept can all benefit rear-seat passengers looking for a superb experience.

While the Volvo S90L looks to be introduced into the Chinese market within the next few months – a market where the demand for long-wheelbase vehicles is the largest, globally – it will be a bit longer until it comes to market in the United States. Once it is though, you can be assured that we here at Volvo of Bonita Springs will be able to provide you with an example to explore, and take out on the road for a test drive. Stop in and express your interest today, and our sales staff will be happy to keep you updated into the future.
