Expanding on the success of its earlier Twin Engine models, Volvo has unveiled the new V60 D5 Twin Engine Diesel-Electric vehicle. It is the Special Edition of the bestselling V60 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid, and it will introduce Volvo's plug-in hybrid cars to a wider audience.
"We were the first car maker to develop and produce a diesel-based plug-in hybrid powertrain with the launch of the V60 D6 in 2012," said Dr. Thomas Müller, Vice President Electrical and Electronics Systems Engineering at Volvo Car Group. "Since then we have been working on further refining our innovative approach to electrification and hybrid powertrains, as can be seen in our brand new XC90 T8 Twin Engine which is just entering full-scale production. With the launch of the V60 D5 Twin Engine Special Edition we are broadening our Twin Engine product range."
Only 500 Special Edition V60 D5's Will be Manufactured
The number of Special Edition models of the V60 D5 will be limited; only 500 models will be available. Later this year, Volvo will release the standard version of the V60 D5.
"We decided to offer a special edition of the V60 D5 Twin Engine to celebrate the growing success and continued roll-out of our Twin Engine product range," added Dr. Thomas Müller. "We are one of few car makers that deliver a true no compromise driving experience – combining the benefits of pure electric drive, high performance and great fuel economy."
The Special Edition comes in Crystal White exterior paint with 19-inch wheels and glossy black exterior detailing. The interior is equipped with a black headliner and piano black trim. The V60 D5 Special Edition also features the unique Blond sport seat upholstery along with decorative white stitching, found in Volvo's Ocean Race editions.
Why Twin Engine Technology?
Twin Engine technology is the name Volvo has chosen for its hybrid powertrain innovation. As an important part of Volvo's Drive-E Powertrain program, Twin Engine technology hybrids represent Volvo's commitment to maximizing driving pleasure while minimizing the cost of ownership and environmental impact.
The Drive-E Powertrain program is the culmination of Volvo's efforts to combine power, efficiency, a superior driving experience, and sustainability. In addition to delivering an exhilarating ride, the program accomplishes that goal with less fuel and fewer emissions.
?How it Works
The Volvo V60 D5 Twin Engine is so fuel-efficient because it offers three drive modes: Pure, Hybrid, and Power. In Pure mode, the electric motor powers the car as much as possible with a range of up to 31.1 en while burning diesel fuel, the car achieves C02 emissions of 48 g/km. In Power mode, the diesel engine and electric motor work in tandem to deliver the maximum possible power. In this mode, the V60 D5 delivers 230 horsepower and accelerates from 0 - 62 mph in 9 seconds.
The V60 D5 is conveniently recharged from a standard power outlet at home or in a parking lot. Although recharging time varies with amperage, a full charge with 10A takes just 4.5 hours. Boost the amperage to 16A and you can charge the car in as little as 3.5 hours.
