The 2016 XC90 comes equipped with a 2.0 liter inline four cylinder engine that is not only turbocharged, but also features a supercharger for additional power and acceleration, pumping out 316 horsepower and a very healthy 295 lb-ft of pure torque. All of this power is connected to the standard all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The XC90 will also be available in a plug-in hybrid version. This version continues to use the same engine as the standard model, but adds in a battery pack and a lot more horsepower. The plug-in hybrid version is rated at a full 400 horsepower and in testing was found to be slightly faster in 0 to 60 mph testing. The current configuration has an electric-only range of 25 miles, which is considered exceptional for a plug-in hybrid.

On the Inside

The 2016 XC90 offers seating for up to seven adults and is available in three trim levels: the Momentum model, the sporty R-Design, and the luxurious Inscription. Despite being listed as the base trim level, the Momentum comes loaded with four-zone automatic climate control, eight way power heated front seats, leather upholstery, a 40/20/40 split mid-seats, 50/50 third row seats, keyless entry and ignition, and a 9 inch touchscreen. You also get a voice controlled navigation system, BlueTooth® audio and phone connectivity, and iPod/USB interfaces.

When you step up to the R-Design trim level, you get an upgraded leather interior, a sport steering wheel with built-in paddle shifters, illuminated step plates, a digital instrument cluster, sport seats, and extra interior illumination. At the Inscription level, you get custom leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and a set of rear window shades. You will also find there are a number of optional upgrades to choose from including auto-dimming, power folding side mirrors, blind spot monitoring, surround-view parking cameras, and a rear cross-traffic monitoring system.

The Safest Vehicles on the Road

Volvo has always been known for building many of the safest vehicles on the road, and the 2016 Volvo XC90 has been cut from the same mold. The XC90 comes equipped with four wheel anti-lock disc brakes, traction and stability control, a host of airbags including anti-whiplash airbags, and frontal-collision warning that covers pedestrians and cyclists and includes frontal-crash mitigation braking.

This year the XC90 features the Volvo Run-Off-Road® protection system that detects when you go off the road. At this point all seatbelts will automatically tighten to make better use of the impact absorbing seat cushions in protecting you and your family.
